What is the difference between Quartz watches and automatic watches?

The biggest difference is and will be that Quartz watches are battery-powered watches, while automatic watches are powered by kinetic energy. Another big difference is that the second hand runs quietly and “fluidly” around the movement, which is in contrast to the second hand in Quartz watches that ticks around. You will therefore also be able to hear the difference.

A battery-powered watch should not be wound continuously unless it is in use. It should be an automatic movement, which typically has a “power reserve” of 40 hours, where it can lie still and still keep time. If you exceed the power reserve, the watch will automatically stop, after which you must wind it manually again.

How do you maintain automatic watches?

When you have an automatic watch, it means that the watch winds itself up. It does this using kinetic energy that occurs in contact with your wrist. If you don't wear it every day, you need to wind it up if you want to be sure that it is running fairly accurately. You do this by turning the crown clockwise 10-15 times.

If you can see the date in the movement and it does not match, it is important that you do it correctly to avoid damaging the movement. Therefore, it is best not to change the date and day of the week between 10 pm and 3 am, and it is also best not to turn the crown counterclockwise.

Like all other watches, it is important to have it checked by a watchmaker every two years. This ensures that the watch maintains its performance and that it does not wear out too quickly. A watch can last for many years and many generations if it is well looked after – so pay extra attention.

Otherwise, the typical maintenance advice applies: Take it off when cleaning, being active or taking a shower. Store it in a watch box and clean it regularly to remove dirt and grime.
